This is such an empowering book. Dark-skinned girls who feel insecure about their image will get so much from this book, but I see the message reaching many more people. I love the dialogue between the two sisters, and how relatable the older sister’s story is to what her little sister is feeling. I love the fantasy aspect in this story through the inclusion of the magic mirror. I can see young readers being taken on that beautiful journey with sisters. I also thought the illustrations were well done. Great job to the author.

About To Love Me Is To Love the Skin I'm In
Deja feels uncomfortable in her skin. Because she does not see women in the media who look like her, she does not appreciate her own beauty. With the help of her older sister and her magic mirror, Deja goes on an adventure where she learns about accomplished, beautiful dark-skinned women. Through this journey, she begins to love and accept herself. Stephanie Carter wrote this book to help young children of all backgrounds appreciate their natural beauty and know their achievements are not limited by the way they look. It is Stephanie’s hope that this book will also spark conversation about colorism, acceptance and self-love.

Inspirational Read
Monica - Amazon Review
I purchased this Children’s Book recently by Author Stephanie Carter. I discovered this to be a delightful and inspiring read for children of all races, backgrounds, and ethnicities. Children at any age can struggle with their appearance and insecurities, and it’s with books like these that are shown and read to them at a young age that can help boost their self-esteem and have a healthy and positive self-image. I would recommend for any household to have a copy of this book on hand for easy access for children to read, or to be read aloud to all children. It’s a must read and I’m glad I made purchase.
